From his schooling (1959-1969), in which he followed some business and even some art studies, he only graduated with a 25m swimming certificate!?
In 1970 he did an apprenticeship in mechanics and body repairs. After military service in 1971 in the 1st para division in Diest, he tried his hand at a variety of odd jobs: owner of 2 jeans’ shops, taxi driver, car salesman, barman, etc…
In 1973 he started racing as an amateur. In 1976, he became a sales representative for an organic food wholesaler. The company closed down, leaving him unemployed in 1977, so he started his own business as a wholesaler and retailer of organic food, opening several shops (1978-1980).
In 1981, he continued his career as a professional racing car driver.
